Skull and Cross Bones...any truth....????
http://www.pegasusarchive.org/norman..._GermanPOW.jpg
Private Durston, of the 9th Battalion's "A" Company, with a wounded German POW near the Ecarde crossroads, near the Chateau d'Amfreville. Just above Durston's left wrist there is a skull and crossbones on his smock. This indicates that he was amongst those men of "A" Company who carried out the glider assault on the Merville Battery. Every man in G-B Force had a luminous skull and crossbones painted about them, so that once they had landed in the battery they could be distinguished from the enemy. Any comments.... Jo

Thanks. What is the expansion of G-B force? Gliderborne?

Sounds like an odd practice having anything luminous painted on a smock as if to advertise 'shoot me here'; that said the little 'jacket' type waistcoats worn over BD etc at night appear to be luminous so who knows?

Slightly off topic, but Allied airborne troops were issued with luminous discs for nightime ID purposes during the war, so it might not be altogether improbable:

Some individual units had markings painted on the back of their oversmocks, to be discarded upon landing.
Careful with those luminous disks, they are still radioactive! Rgds, Thomas. |

Apparently there are photographs in the Eagle magazine of Glider Pilots prior to D-Day with skull and crossbones painted on their (over)smocks.

G-B force refers to the officer Gordon-Browne who was 2i/c of 'A' company under Major Parry of the 9th Battalion.

Well spotted Magu!
That book is still a classic - as is his 'The Green Beret'. |

We used disc's on our helmets, taken from modern American helmet straps. Worn at the rear.
