RAMC badges
Just received a selection of RAMC badges from Cultman, brought off eBay.
I brought these for one item in the bundle (see attached) It looks like a 1st Aid Instructor badge in silver & gilt. Size is 24mm x 20mm and no makers name. I have checked this piece and it is not a collar badge with crown and scroll removed. There is no evidence or marks to say this. Question - On which uniform would this have worn? Service dress or Blues?? I look forward to your replies... engr9266

Jerry,
I have a similar item (bottom row centre) which shows signs of having crown and scroll removed. Must have been done for a reason? Tim

My guess would be so it could be worn as a metal qualification badge.
Terry PS - I've actually been looking for one just for that reason. |

I would have to agree with engr9266. The cap/collar badges with scroll and crown removed are a different shape. The wreath on those badges is very slightly oval but his example appears to be uniformly round. I would agree is is purpose made rather than adapted.

The photo on the page I linked of "Nurse BLOCH-ERRERA wearing the badge on her field cap and collars" appears to show 'round' badges. .

For the Belgium nusrses kitted out in British uniforms, the closest badge to there original badge was a RAMC collar badge sans crown and scroll. These were lugged badges and worn as collars and cap badges. Due to the low number of these nurses there was no need to have new badges made during the war as the RAMC modified ones sufficed. Post war the nurses reverted to Belgium made badges. |

Some of these nurses were from middle/uppper class backgrounds so may not have been happy with a 'modified' badge ? While Tim's example has had the crown and scroll removed Jerry's one (which he has checked) appears to have been manufactured without a crown or scroll. .

My initial reaction when I saw the 1st post was to say it looked liked an RAMC officers collar badge sans crown and scroll (The collar badges were more typically round than the oval wreath of the cap badge)
But when comparing to my RAMC officers collar badges there are distinct differences in the wreath, so I too suspect this was specifically made and probably for an officer. I have seen some images of the SWH (Scottish Womens Hospital) medical staff wearing RAMC collars sans crown and title, so this may have been specifically made for an officer in the SWH c.WWI Last edited by Milmed; 07-01-24 at 01:37 PM. |
