Quick answer is, you don't. Blackened badges vary from regimentally ordered black anodised to squady painted with whatever paint is available, varying from Humbrol model kit enamel to army supplied tyre paint, and anything in between. This is one badge collecting avenue where provenance might be more relevant than anything else.

I have a silver coloured anodised aluminium Parachute Regiment badge with London Badge & Button Co Ltd on the slider as opposed to LB&B....

Hi Jack,

Probably used from 1973 onwards with a badge found with this mark on a master pattern tag dated 26th February 1985. Still thought to be in use in the late 2000s.
