Default RA ATS trade proficiency badge

Hi All,

My first post here. I am researching my mother in law's service in the ATS. She served with the 12th Anti-Aircraft Division during WW2 and I have been able to establish that from one photo of her which shows the RA marking on her helmet and the Red diamond & domino patch on her sleeve. In another photo she is wearing dress uniform and on her right sleeve she has a trade proficiency badge. Unfortunately the image only shows part of the badge and not quite enough to establish what the letter in it is. I suspect there is more than one letter. I have attached an edited image of the badge area of the photo. Any experts out there have a clue about this one?

Could be searchlight crew, SL in a half-wreath.

Looks like "C" Class Tradesman to me, with the 2nd pattern AA black on red sign.

I considered that, but thought the "C" wrongly positioned in comparison to the wreath for "MC", checked the images in British Army Proficiency Badges.
Can't say for sure I suppose, given manufacturers variations, but I'll stay with "C" rather than "MC".
I don't think it fits with "SLO" either.

I think a Height Taker may be more appropriate for an AA unit.
See image below.

That's looking good.
Comparing the size and positioning of the "C" or "H" the C still looks the one to me, but manufacturers variations........

Thanks for all the suggestions and posted images. I agree that it could be the MC or the H. It is a pity that more of the badge is not visible in the photo.

"MC", unofficial, possibly "Motor Cyclist".

I think Simons "H" suggestion sounds like the most appropriate badge to wear above stripes, but I can't prove it.

No, all we know for sure is that she was a L/Cpl in the ATS and was in one of the units of the 12th AA Div in Central Scotland and we believe she later served somewhere in the London area (possibly with one of the 12th AA Div units that moved south). We established her Division allocation from a photo showing her wearing the 12th arm patch and the RA red/blue diamond on her helmet plus the photo from which the crop of the trade badge came which has her with ATS epaullette badges and a RA badge above her left tunic pocket. We were hoping someone would positively identify the trade proficiency badge from the scrap of it seen in the photo. So far the guys on here have come up with H for Height Taker or MC, still waiting for an explanation of what that was.
