Default A very large Sapper

Hi Gents,

I thought I'd post the following large badge for interest. I seem to recall a link to something similar on the forum previously but it has long gone.

The badge I have was purchased at a snip as a curio but having received it I've found it to be an attractive item and once I've had the walls strengthened at home I will probably frame it as a centre piece in a display of RE badges.

REgards.

Ry

Blimey! And they're blaming scrap metal theft for the disappearance of manhole covers! .

You're not too far off of the mark with your manhole cover comment Peter.

This badge is probably worth more in scrap than I paid for it so I'm pleased that it has found refuge. Now all I have to do is find the hat that it came from, shouldn't be too hard!

Regards

Ry

Default Big hat

Charlie,

Could have been from the one of the mess's front door plaques . I have seen similar example outside the Engineer 's Sgt's mess in Barker barracks in
Paderborn

Hi Hussar,

My thinking runs similar to yours, an adornment for a mess or orderly room door or similar.
It would be nice to have had it's history but I'm happy to have it regardless and am pleased that it has survived.

I suppose it could have come from any number of camps / barracks that have been lost to the Corps in recent times. If I recall correctly barker barracks was RA in my time (32 Heavy Regt), I could be wrong and I also believe that one of the RE Sqns that I served in ended up there.

Regards

Ry

Look for someone with an extremely thick neck, almost certainly stooped and looking for a chiropractor!

Ry,
Yo remember that time you were in Germany and the beer chariot was getting you home really slowly? It was because you had this in the front basket with yer donner kebab, an ash tray and a coat that didn't belong to you...

Good point there Eddie it looks very like a popular brand of restrike as sold on E-bay by some one who drives a public hire vehicle in South Wales...

Hi Gents,

Thanks for all your replies on this one

David, I can think of a dozen or more Sappers that match your description, me included (Thicker in the waist than the neck though)!

Matti, I'm still getting over the memory of nights like that one, Oh for a real Gyros mit Tzatziki

John, nice to see your large badges and I know a couple of old REME boys who would love those

Eddie, Hi Mate! It can't be a restrike as it doesn't bend although I'm a bit worried at the lack of a slider

REgards to all.

Ry
