Default WW1 Cap Ribbons

For your viewing and to add to the collective knowledge base.
Cap ribbon with the name of H.M.S. Rinaldo (1900-1921)
This ribbon is on a white duck cap and is black silk with yellow thread name letters. I believe that both the cap and ribbon are private purchase type items.

Second,
Cap ribbons to H.M.S. Minerva (1895-1920).
Black silk with the name lettering in gold wire.

Both these items came with a number of other uniform items from a named estate.
If anyone is interested in images of the uniforms please PM me.
Barry

Default WW1 Cap Ribbons

Lovely items! Thanks very much for showing them.

Gold wire tallies weren't the only ones used during WW1. On 21st February 1918 AWO 662/18 introduced yellow silk lettering on cap tallies as a wartime economy to conserve stocks of gold wire used in the lettering of tallies.

The use of yellow silk lettering was quite short-lived as AWO 2665/19 of 6th August 1919 reintroduced gold wire lettering, with the stipulation that silk lettered tallies should continue to be used until worn out and service stocks used-up.

So it's quite possible that what you have is actually one of the shortlived wartime economy tallies.

I'd certainly be interested in seeing some images of the uniforms! Do I still need to PM you to say that now that I've just told you?

Pete

Hi Pete,
PM sent
photo of the blue serge jumper. This example is the number 2 and made without cuffs but has been used as number 1 dress with the addition of a gold wire stokers badge and two sea service chevrons.
The white duck jumper has a blue stokers badge.
