Default Small Garhwal rifles badge

Hello all,

I bought this badge a while back and would appreciate your views. A very small Garhwal Rifles badge, I would like to know if it is OK and if so, any ideas of the age or era it is from and if it is a cap badge or collar etc. It measures about 1 & 1/8 inches or about 29mm high and is a very solid badge with a silver coloured finish with a darker colour showing on the front.

Thanks in advance for any replies,

Regards Alan Y

I can not say anything about it being genuine or not. but it is post 1950 because it shows the Indian state symbol (Lions of Ashoka).

Thanks for the reply Wmr-RHB, that’s very helpful as the only other one I have seen had the King’s crown, so that must have been pre-1950.

They are always a very small cap badge as far as I have seen, Kevin

Thanks Kevin,

I have never seen one before so I had nothing to go by as to the size so it looked a bit small to me compared with any other badges I have.

It looks to be the sort of thing that an ex-soldier would wear in the buttonhole of his jacket lapel.

I have to disagree with Lampwick. I believe this is a standard cap badge - they are quite small - for the Indian Army's regiment. Post 1950, as has been pointed out. The Garwhalis wear a pill box, like the Gurkhas, for dress parades and I believe this badge fits that cap. It certainly matches the size, i think, of others I've seen in the past. Googel 'Garwhal Rifles Landsdowne' [their base] for photos of passing out parades in which they appear to wear this.

Here are my RGR badges. 3 small including one silver one with hall marks and a much bigger one. I think the large one might be for a mess waiter. I have never seen another large one.

The RGRs had pipers, as the Gurkhas did, so the large one might be a plaid badge as well.
