Default George English Auction results

Hi All
Although it is very sad that the SA collecting community has lost such a good collector, it has given us an opportunity to find some of those elusive badges which never seem to come on the market. I was just looking through the results of the sale, and some of the prices really astounded me.
I was lucky enough to win the lot of Zululand Mounted Rifles badges which I've just finished doing my jiffy bag dance over, so I thought I'd share them.

Any more of you guys with winning lots from the auction that you'd consider showing off here for the rest of us.

Cheers,

Alex

Alex,

I only wish it had been mentioned before it ended, I'm sure I would have had a go at some.

regards

Hi Simon
It was done in conjunction with Kaplan's, so if you were registered with them you would have got notification. I was overseas at the time and was unable to access the forum, so no chance of giving a heads up.
Cheers,
Alex

Alex

I have bought 2 from the collection via a dealer who was there, might have cost me a little more but I have a problem with Kaplans auctions...

Regards
Brian

Alex

I have them but nothing like the ZMR you acquired, well done!!!

I have been after a cap badge to the 1st Batt South West African Infantry ever since getting my hands on the Post war OC's medal group. Well that is now one less box to tick off They are quite hard to get hold of, had to wait around 3 years to get this one.

Regards
Brian

By the way it came as quite a shock to all at our medal meeting today, that you have put together a naval publication! Why so clandestine?

You are certainly not alone when it comes to the odd problem, a very unique saleroom!

Michael Kaplan has his own auctions.
Well known in SA for South African and Rhodesian militaria.
Also well known to people like myself who have caught him out.

Hi Brian
Looking at some of the prices realised at the auction, I consider myself very lucky to have won the ZMR badges.

As for the book, it has been a frustrating year as I was hoping to have it out last June/July but with doing it privately it has been a slow slog to get it printed and for the last month I've been having problems with the printers. All going well, it'll be out next week and then I'll make it public here. So far the project has been very, very slow and it's taken me many years to get it finished but I think it'll cover just about everything a SA Naval collector could want. After the original plan to put together a little booklet on cap badges and expecting to have no more than 50 or so pictures, the finished book runs to just under 200 pages and over 1300 images!

Hopefully I'll be able to confirm the completion next week, all going well...

Cheers,

Alex

Hello Brian,
Is all this Edwardian ACF stuff so rare in South Africa these days, the country used to be awash with that sort of stuff not so many years ago?
Regards Frank

Frank...he has had some great stuff in the past but you are never quite sure what goes on during OR after the auction. I had won a medal on a recent auction via a mate who sat in during the auction. It had overnight mysteriously "never arrived from the vendor" what a joke...how could it have been bidded on at the auction the day before or even get written up in the catalogue? Hence my feelings

Frank it has largely dried up, like this last auction one basically has to wait for a collection to come onto the market. Sadly of course the prices on some of the items go for bargains due the overwelming amount of lots. Some of the guys who attended scored big time. Unfortunately some of us have to work for a living and cannot nip off on a 2 or 3 day 1500 km round trip to Gangsters Paradise (Gauteng's apt nickname due to their number plates ending in GP), to add to the collection
