Hi all...

Can anyone offer any help on this naval badge found detecting in Dorset? From the fouled anchor design I'm thinking early 1800s but not sure if they had badges then as such so possibly later 1800s. One lug survives on the back and I'm unsure how many were there originally. Measures approx 38mm in diameter. Any help appreciated and will be likely sold at some point.

Think it maybe from a German Navy belt buckle?

Thanks. Just google image searched them and the back is wrong on mine as it has a lug like a cap badge would. Also the belt plates have a lined background whereas mine has a sunburst similar to an 1812 RN surgeon's button. I'll keep looking at German naval bits and see if I can find something.

Hi Phil,
Interesting badge, whilst I agree with you that it is probably British and that it is likely to be 1800s-1840ish from it's style, I have no idea what it is. What I can say is that is isn't like anything I came across when researching the RM badge book, during which I went through the collections and archives of the NMRN, RMM and NMM.

Not every badge from the early 1800s with a foulled anchor is RN or RM, but this certainly looks like an official item.

Thanks for the info John. I too have researched this for quite sometime and can find nothing like it online or in my reference library. It's an odd one and I'm reluctant to sell it until I know what it is as I hate selling things as "unidentified"!
