Default Queen's Button

Would one of our button aficionados be kind enough to date this Queen's button for me, please?

Ø = 13mm approx.

With thanks,

JT

Hello JT

That mess dress button has been around since 1881 at least and was, as far as I am aware, in use up until the 1950s when the regiment amalgamated.

There are at least a couple of slightly different versions though, one with the head facing to the left (as yours does) and another with the head looking forward.

Thank you, Roger.

Does the orientation of the head have any bearing on the date, or were both versions in use simultaneously?

Thanks again,

JT

Hello JT

As far as I know the differences are just manufacturer's variations. Both the 1900 and 1934 Dress Regulations, for example, just specified 'the lamb in silver', no mention of which way it should be looking!
