Default WW2 Despatch Rider Photo

Hi Gents,

I wanted to share this great little WWII Despatch Rider photo I picked up recently. Rare to find one with such a clear image from this period.

Sadly no insignia visible, aside from the petrol tank numbering. Has anyone any idea of the meaning/designation of these numbers?

Cheers,

Roy

The number on the petrol tank is the unique ‘census number’ in effect the registration number which prior to 1940 would have been a civilian type registration. Photos seem to show there was usually a ‘C’ prefix followed by 7 or more digits.
Sometimes seen on an arc above the front mudguard or, as in your photo on the fuel tank. A smaller oblong plate was sometimes on the rear mudguard.
This may be of interest https://www.wdnorton.nl/Census_and_c...t_numbers.html

It may be possible to trace census numbers through the Royal Logistic Corps museum, see link above.

Hi Roy

Nice picture of a 500cc Norton 16H, the census number isn't very clear but looks to be 5267311 which would mean the frame number was W84111 and it was from contract S2602 for 5,000 machines, delivery starting Jan 1944.

Any chance of a descent scan for my files?

Cheers
Rob

A rear wheel on the Norton would have improved the ride.

I think it's the angle of the picture, the stand is still in the up position.
