Hello Gerard

I'm afraid that I can't help much, but I will try and get the ball rolling.......

The thing that stands out most is the cross and the fact that it is on a vehicle that would seem to date from the early part of the 20th century. Perhaps it is something to do with field ambulances and dates from around the time of The Great War?

Not being an authority on early motor vehicles (or modern!) could it be earlier than WW1?

Hopefully someone will be along with the answer soon.

Good to see another Herts chap on the forum

Andy

I can't decide if it is an early "motor" vehicle or not. There is a bit that looks like a steering wheel but the part in front of that looks more like a seat than an engine cowl to me. The fact that the rear wheels are larger than the front ones makes me think the badge represents a horse drawn vehicle.

My guess would be that it is certainly no later than WW1. I think I would also be searching civilian "humane" societies such as the Red Cross and the Order of St John...though I believe the later is usually represented by Maltese Cross. My Google of early horse drawn field ambulances seems to show that in most cases the driver was mounted on one of the horses rather than on a seat. Civilian ambulances had the drivers on seats.

They're my thoughts. No facts, only opinions I am afraid.

More likely to be the wind screen, shield, deflector of a Red Cross ambulance. Google Red Cross Ambulance.
