Default Is this man a marine WW2?

Hi all.

My great grandfather was somewhat of a mystery. We have a photograph of him from ww2 and a story that he was in the marines under a false name. I am going to send of for his records and see what they find, but I wondered if you could help me to confirm that this is indeed a WW2 Marines uniform.

Hi,
Yes he's a Royal Marine WW11, wearing a later war post 1942 battledress, might help dates for you.

Default WW2 marine

Looks like he could be a Royal Marine Commando, as there is no tombstone shaped cloth backing to his beret badge (as would be worn on a sea-going ‘ships marine’ blue beret) so his beret is likely to be the commando green beret.

Good shout Colin, that would work out date wise as the Royal Marines became commando in 1942 and adopted the green beret later that year and as you say can’t see the tombstone backing .

Many thanks to you all, that is more than I could have hoped for. Now I know for sure which form to send off when I apply, so many thanks. The family story is that he was in the Duke of Cornwall light infantry at the start of the war but deserted and later rejoined under a false name and became a marine. Then apparently later confessed who he was but was pardoned due to rejoining. Doesn't ring true to me which is why I want the records but at least I know a very small part of it is true now.
