SAS badgeon red beret

further to the other emails in this chain.
I have attached a few pics, 2 of new Parachute Regt berets, picked up from D Sqn lines by a mate after a lad was clearing out his room.
Both have the dark shade behind where the parachute regt cap badge with Loop attachments have been fitted.
One is private purchase with silk lining, the other issue, both with bows sewn on. Thought all modern para badges were slidered!
The 3rd is my other KANGOL beret, but has no date, doesnt look like one was there, unlike on my NZ Malayan period beret where you can make out it was there.
Also, as LUC mentioned, there is no slider fitted on this one, so does it make it pre 49???

Jon, I have an AA parachute regt cap badge with lugs so not all modern badges have sliders.

Is there a WD stamp on the inside of your undated beret? That narrows the year of production down significantly. If it doesn't show, spray with water and wait a few moments. If there ever was a stamp it will become more visible.

And yes, to the best of my knowledge no British made beret has a slider pocket before 1949.

Has anyone considered that this might actually be a veterans beret?
I know of a WWII 1st Bn Border Regt veteran who bought both his current post-war maroon beret, because of a perfect fit, and original WWII badge at car boot sales, because he lost his original.
Imagine the length of the thread here on this forum when that'll surface on the market with provenance.

Last month I saw 2 veterans at the Schoonoord hotel during the Arnhem commemorations both wearing a repro beret. One of them had a straight airborne strip embroidered onto it, the other one an XXI parachute title. And yes, these were original.
Needless to say, it was a fantastic sight! Brittle men, but a huge aura of proudness surrounded them.

Yes let us not forget that many differant cap badges were (and still are) worn on the Maroon Beret.

I have a 1st Airborne Division OFP with RAOC slidered cap badge as well as having seen an officers beret useing a bladed cap badge as well.

I believe that when 22 SAS changed from the Malayan Scouts to the SAS in Dec 1951, they wore the Red Beret with the SAS badge on it. They then changed to the Buff beret in the late 50s prior going to Oman in Nov 1958. The only exception was when the Parachute Regiment Sqn of 22 SAS was formed and went to Malaya during the Emergency, the still wore the Parachute Regt cap badge. Everyone else with 22 SAS in Malaya all wore the Red Beret, according to my research. I hope that this was helpful.

Hi, Regards to comments regarding NZSAS with this beret. I have my Dads beret he was in the NZSAS in Malaya 1955-57, looks similar, his one is clearly dated 1946. They were issued with two berets.

Welcome to the group John. I managed to have a look at Buzz Burrows original beret a few years ago when Wayne H was back from China. His was a UK beret (no visible date) with a UK bullion badge and his name stitched inside. BR Shaun

Here are the photos. Have included his wings and old badge from his other beret which is the one he wore hence its condition. Beret badge on the right of photos of badges is a new issue. Hope this helps.
