RA flaming grenade.
I am aware this thread has been dormant for some time, but as I have recently found the following info I have added it for completeness sake.
1904 Dress Regs contain photo of officer's badges. This pictures RE officer’s grenade collar with 9 flames & RA grenade collar with 7 flames. It does not indicate metals. Cap, Field Service; Introduced by AO 122 of 1937 as an amendment to Dress Regulations 1934, this is the same as the old ‘Field Cap (as at 1.1 above) in design and dimensions. The body of the cap is of scarlet cloth, the peak and flaps are of blue cloth, and it has gold French braid welts on the cap and flaps and on the front and back seams. For wear as an optional head dress with mess dress or on other informal occasions; not to be worn upon parade or duty, and to be maintained in addition to, and not in substitution for the forage cap. Badge; On the left side, a grenade in gold embroidery with a scroll inscribed ‘Ubique’ in silver embroidery, on a scarlet ground. Until 1922 the same design grenade (Catalogue No 1674) was worn by OR's of both RA & RE, but only as tunic insignia. The Priced Vocabulary for 1923 is the first to list the new RE Grenades: Catalogue item 3004- Grenade gold- S/Sgt, Sgt, Lance Sgt & band. Catalogue item 3005- Grenade RE Silver Catalogue item 3006- Worsted Grenade RE- yellow on blue. The RA collar badge was officially described in the same document as 'Grenade metal- Arm, Collar or Shoulder Strap'. Its Catalogue number was 3002. On the SD cap Other Ranks wore the service dress cap badge (ie the large Gun) until ACI 1179 of 1941 authorised the wearing of a gilt grenade. 09.06.41. Telegram sent by WO to all Commands ‘RA cap badge will be of the ‘grenade’ type. Collar badge (Catalogue CB 0520) will be utilised for this service. Cap badges of the ‘gun’ type (Catalogue CB 0289) already in possession will continue to be worn until unserviceable, and no complete change over by units to the new badge will be permitted. No objections will be raised to both types of badge being worn in any one unit.’ 26.06.41. Army Orders refers to above, permitting retention of ‘gun’ badge for horsed units wearing ‘Cap SD Stiff’. The first order for the plastic grenade was placed on 10.02.42. It was for wear both as a head-dress and collar badge, however, collar badges had not been authorised on battledress and SD Tunics were almost obsolete by this date. By 1951 the Gun badge had again been authorised for wear by Other Ranks on the beret. Hope this helps, Stephen. |
