RTR Piper's Plaid Brooch
I recently picked up this little beauty in a trade - a Royal Tank Regiment Piper's Plaid Brooch.
Now has become one of my favourite badges. Just need to find a Sergeant Piper's plaid brooch now to go with it (crossed machine guns). Enjoy! Mick

Is there actually photographic evidence that this was worn post 1939 by the Royal Tank Regiment, if so, I would certainly be interested to see it, I would have thought it was only worn by the Tank Corps and perhaps post 1924, by the Royal Tank Corps for a short period of time.

It rates a mention in Robin Hodges’s badge book but no picture of it being worn.
I am on the RTR Pipes and Drums FB page so might send them a message and see what they can tell me about it. Mick

The RTR have always been proud of their badge and motto, I'd be very surprised if it had ever been worn by them, excepting odd men who had their twenty odd years in and who had perhaps retained their original brooch, notwithstanding, I'd be keen to see actual proof.

I've sent a message to the RTR Pipes and Drums about these plaid brooches and will share any response I get.
I think they were worn by 4RTR. Mick

The one with the cross MGs is currently worn as confirmed by the RTR Pipes and Drums FB admin.
The other one with the TC badge is not currently worn but as mentioned earlier I suspect it was worn only by 4RTR. Mick

You are saying that the Royal Tank Regiment actually wear MGC "style" brooches?
Do you know when and where these were actually manufactured? |

I'm all for units commemorating their forebears, be it cadet units wearing the badge of the Lovat Scouts (no longer the case?), Tankies wearing MG insignia or RRF carrying the oldDrummer's Colours of the NF - good stuff. The only plaid brooch I've seen by 4 RTR in photos is the one with the yellow Cairngorm centre - any photos of other brooches available? |

There is a history of the Pipes and Drums on here www.4and7royaltankregiment.com following the pipes and drums link.
No available images on there or on Facebook show the MGC crossed guns in wear. I’m pretty sure a discussion of the ‘Guns’ Plaid Brooch has been brought up on here before. They used to be available to buy until recently on a Scottish Insignia site, the name of which escapes me at the moment but it was something like Lathroig. Paul |
