Default Punjab Regiment

Picked up this a while ago. It's an Indian cast by the look of it. It has 2 lugs on the back, E-W. The rear is very smooth, which is unusual for Indian casts, and it has 'J R GAUNT LONDON' clearly marked on the back! It is 36,5mm wide by 43,5mm high. Any comments or info would be appreciated. Thanks

That is the 1st Punjab Regiment badge as worn from 1922 to 48. It is indeed a casting as most Indian OR's badges were. I have an Army Remount Dept. India badge that is cast in the same manner with the same Gaunt maker mark.
I think that when these badges were made in India, they copied everything right down to the makers mark. That does not mean that they are not original period pieces however. Just the way they were made.
The officer's pattern badge for this regiment is the same design, but in silver and gilt and much finer quality of course.

Default Punjab Reg

Hi CB
Thanks for the info. It's amazing that the makers mark is crisp and clear but the rest of the badge is rough looking. Cheers. Alex
