Default The Welsh Reg. Blackened Brass

Would appreciate comments on this recent purchase, good one or bad. It has a very thick slider but the blacking is only on the front of the badge.
Purchased as genuine and looks OK to me but I'm often wrong.

Hi Myles. I think you pointed out the feature I would have also. The back not being blackened. As I understand that this was a factory point of application, it should be. Also I think it should be a two part badge with the scroll attached.

I might be informed I'm wrong, as blackened badges have been hotly discussed recently.

Here's mine. The only reason I went for it was the two part construction and the tapered slider and slight crimp to the top.

What you might have is an economy sprayed by a collector maybe who wanted it to display as the cyclists.

All this is IMO. See what anyone else say's.

Regards
Simon.

Thanks for that Simon, at least I now know the points to look for in a correct blackened brass one.
This one will be going back for a refund.

Myles

there is no evidence to suggest that yours is not right. At worst it is a economy badge that has been painted, As such it has some value.

Hi Myles

That's OK, but hopefully someone might come in and confirm what I said. So don't be too hasty in sending it back. I might be way off.

Is there a gold colour to the braze point on the slider. I can't see from the pic. If yes, then if you didn't pay too much and don't have it already; the Welsh 1916 economy badges aren't cheap either really. I've seen them go for 30 to 35 pound, not including shipping.

As I said, wait to see if anyone will help you out and confirm my comments.

Cheers

Simon

Apart from the black paint it appears to be identical to the economy version I have in my collection, which I think is a good one.

I would say it looks Ok JB, and same for Myles. Shouldn't take much to clean the black off.

Simon, yes there is gold graze to the slider and the badge is of better quality than the other All Brass Welsh Economy ones I have, so I am having second thoughts about returning it; its just not the TF badge I thought it was. Looks like I still need one then.
Thanks to all for the input.
Myles

Hello Simon. I think there are members on the forum for and against the badge you have. You might want to search for old threads. Regards, Paul.

Myles.

If you bought this as a 7th Welsh then keep it as is, during WW1 they did start to run out of the standard blackened badge and at that time c1916/17 they were told that they could blacken a standard badge, Econ was the best to use.

I think the basic badge is fine, though when and why it was blackened is I assume the big question which I can't help with.

Brookies, can you provide a documentary reference for 7/Welsh (or any other unit) "being told that they could blacken a standard badge". It might have implications for many other badges !
Thanks

Hi paul. I usually have someone sweeping in to tell me either way to date. With the thread subject maybe someone will fill me in on these points that make it a fake.
If not, I'll post it on it's own thread and see what the forum say's.

Cheers

Simon.

I was told of this happen by Col Morrey Salmon who was in the 7th Welsh pre WW1 (went from a pte to sgt) then moved to the 16th Welsh where he had some swift promotion.

He was also the chairman of the 7th Welsh O.C.A and I have a letter some where from the OCA will try and get it scanned on.
