Yvon J Allain - Le Regiment de la Chaudiere
Hi All,
I thought that since I went on a Rampage this weekend posting for the first time and talking about my Grandfather that I would also post some of his pictures. Picture 1 is my favourite. Picture 2 you can see his Good Conduct Chevron which he was awarded in 1942. Picture 3 and 4 are from D-Company's Group Photo that was taken in June, 1941 at Sussex N.B....1 month prior to the Regiment leaving for Overseas. The fifth was a photo taken of him wearing a CASF Sweater - our family has no idea when or where this photo of him was taken. The last one has a stamp of a photo studio in England circa 1943. Mike |

Mike, Excellent images. The portraits with all of the insignia detail are great. Your time line is of great interest. Shoulder titles for 3 CID were, according to archives acquired in both Canada and the UK. There is a fair bit of documentation indicating that the Chauds had purchased, privately, shoulder titles in Canada before they went overseas. Your photos illustrate that the titles were in use by 1941. Thanks.

Famous Picture of King Inspecting the Troops
Hi Bill,
Here is a picture of Mackenzie King inspecting the Chaudiere with a link to the Archives. What it says is that he is inspecting the troops on July 1, 1941 in Redhill, England. Unfortunately on this date the Regiment was still in Sussex N.B...they did not embark onto Troop Transport ships until July 21, 1941 and arrived in Gourock Scotland sometime late July early August 1941 ( I am at work so I cannot pinpoint that date from my Grandfathers Service Record). Essentially what I am getting at is this picture may have been taken in Canada prior to them leaving for the U.K....or at the very least may have been taken early upon their arrival in the U.K. The picture however is definitely mislabelled. The photo number and the accession number (1967-052) show that this photo is from the DND overseas collection so, if there is an error it will be related to the date and not the location.

Interesting tidbit of information Clive. None of the Chaud's appear to be wearing the 3 CID patches. The caption is a bit puzzling. Was it common for regiments of one division to be at the sports day of another division? I thought these days were more of an in house activity?

Hey!
Just to clarify things a bit on collection accession numbers... Museums use accession numbers on a yearly basis... So this picture was inventoried in their collection in 1967... and was the 52nd object. (re-invetoried in this case, prior number was 353-20) You could get "lot" numbers too.... it would look like this : 1967.52.001 And parts numbers : 1967.52.001.1-57 (a group of 57 objets... of 57 objets that belong to a main object) It's never the birthdate of the object or picture. There are other numbering methods... but this is the most frequently used. Sorry it had nothing to do with "La Chaudière" !!! |

The DND collection found under Accession 1967-052 incudes over 100,000 images and goes up to, and includes, Korea. If the sports day was a Corps or Army day then there would be representatives from more than one division. For whatever reason I can't load this page so I don't know what the caption is. I do know that many captions are incorrect and you are always best to view the Red Books at LAC in order to determine date, photographer and event.

Good day servicepub, Clive, the caption reads...that WLMK inspecting a guard of honour from le Regiment de la Chaudiere at the 1st Canadian Infantry Division's Sports Day. 1 July,1941 Redhill England. Credit: Capt Laurie A.Audrain (PA-152440).
Does this help? Jo

Hi Clive, I was puzzled by the fact that it said 1st CID day and not a corps or army day. Most of the regimental histories that I have read indicated regimental or bde sports days, divisional etc. It was odd in my mind that a 3 CID regiment was at the 1 CID day. This could be explained in a myriad of ways.
The key on this photo is the regimental titles clearly visible, dated to 1941. |

I note the helmet flashes being worn by the "Chauds" and would like to see an actual example if anyone has such a beast in their collection.
Here http://www.servicepub.com/helmet%20flashes.htm is what is known generally. Thanks to Ken Joyce for photographing most of these at the Library & Archives Canada. Although still some time away Roger Lucy is working on a third edition of his iconic "Tin Lids - Canadian Combat Helmets". In this edition Roger will be listing, and showing, as many decaled helmets as possible as well as providing a colour chart of all known decals used during the Second World War (and post-war if the research proves fruitful). Collectors can help by contacting me with quickie photos of decaled helmets in their collections. Based on these preliminary photos I may follow-up with a request for a better, high resolution, photo.
