Anodised Middlesex Regiment (possible fake)
Asking for advice from our "anodised experts". Picked up this Middlesex Reg. in A/A super cheap (see photo's). Am guessing it’s a fake due to it not having a M/M and it being stamped alloy. Hoping it could be an “unofficial commission” or for ACF badge. Can anyone confirm this. Thanks Martin.Middback2.JPG

I believe Firmin with a plain back is the only type listed in Chris Marsh's book
see below for discussion; https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ight=middlesex

Cadets or TA is the most likely.
There is a marked example. Firmin London. The very small early font without the full stop. A scarce one but if you look hard enough youll find one. |

Martin, as above, yes the unmarked example likely for cadets and worn after the regiment was subject to mergers.
The blank slider and issued example marked FIRMIN LONDON are of differing dies. Note there are 2 distinct collar variations too. Mine attached for interests sake. |

Middlesex A/A
Poor quality badge, between wreath and scroll tips metal that should have been removed.

You find that with some anodised badges Rob. There are various Gaunt London examples with metal left in them. I have a Green Jackets Brigade badge with the metal still in the ends of the cross.

Middlesex A/A
This is the first A/A badge I have seen as badly finished as this one, Is this new phenomenon, even the fakers turn out better looking badges than this effort.

See item at bottom of left hand column. Gaylor's 1990 list.

Hi Jerry, Still relatively wet behind the ears. What do you mean by "is this not another Gaylor badge"? Martin

some consider these as used by cadets or? whilst others consider them fakes. The badges that were copied, some of them are very expensive in AA but the copies were much cheaper so I have some as well as originals having got them before I got the real ones, such as the Welch or SWB. I don't know the truth of the matter, was use by cadets or whomever done, but regardless they are often known by his name. the most obvious tell is plain sliders with mirror detail reverses, whereas most earlier AA had flat backs and makers makers mark on the sliders, though some of the earliest badges don't match what was done later, using metal sliders double naming etc.

It is true that cadet forces wore obselete badges long after the regulars did not. Examples include York and Lancaster, DLI, Cameronians and KOSB. Most of the time they wore old un-issued stock that was no longer needed by the TA but the Y&L were possibly privately bought.
However the Gaylor badges all exhibit the same manufacturing process with rge stamped back and blank slider so I think this is a Gaylor fake and not a ACF badge. |
