Lanyard on Para BD Tunic
Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum and I was hoping someone would be able to help. I have acquired recently a battle dress tunic of a sergeant who was in the Intelligence section of the 3rd Para Battalion. I was able to trace his para training to mid 1943. He was demob around 1947. I'm intrigued about the lanyard which initially I thought was 14th Para (TA). I saw some photos on the forum of a 14th Para lanyard which indicates mainly black with a bit of gold. On mine, it is exactly the opposite. Could it be the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment? It is obviously a walking out BD blouse and I've read somewhere although lanyards were not entirely defined yet among Para battalions during WW2, personnel wore sometime the ones of their parent units. I wouldn't be surprised in this case the original owner was part of this regiment before joining the Paras because he was from Watford and I would imagine during WW2, people were enlisting in the formations close to where they lived. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks. Pierre

Welcome. Para Bn lanyards, or coloured epaulette tabs, were quite defined during the war and 3rd Bn wore a red lanyard.
Enlisting was regional, but posting wasn't always as regional as you'd think. 14th Para was formed in May 1947 from the 5th Battalion Royal Hampshire Regiment (TA). Their lanyard is predominantly black with old gold, the colours of the facings of the Hampshire Regiment. Rgds, Thomas. Last edited by fougasse1940; 22-04-17 at 08:47 PM.

One group of paras used a lanyard made of Paracord didn't they? Slightly off topic but tbh I'm never surprised by finding odd bits on jackets especially if the owner may have worn it to something like a funeral where he might have felt inclined to wear a previous regimental embellishment.
