Default Boer War Badge

I have just received this badge from Australia and can find no reference to it anywhere. It is to the SOUTH AFRICAN IRREGULAR MOUNTED FORCES. Any info on this anywhere?
The badge has an appearance of silver and would appear to have been made at a jeweller?

I think it reads as "SOUTH AFRICA MOUNTED IRREGULAR FORCES"?
I see one sold on ebay some weeks ago, described as possibly an association badge with a name lightly scratched on the back - doesn't say what the name is though.

If that is a name on the back of yours perhaps the National Archives may help:

Then again, given your moniker & purchase you probably know that anyway.

That's a nice example of a generic SAMIF badge, silver and yes made by a jeweller, prior to Vereeniging in 1902, but, I would think one that had been on the Rand rather than one of the Cape silversmiths around King William's town or the handful in Durban or Pietermaritzburg.
