Many Thanks Tim,

as we have a little mini N.I.H. thread going here I thought I would post a few other items.

On the left other ranks A/A collars and the smaller Officers silver collars below them.

On the right an NCO's QC arm badge on green backing . (with what is politely called "service wear")

Hi john,
....very nice! The NCO's sleeve badge was produced in 5 variants, but the badge is exactly the same with the dark green cloth/wool.

The original one is brass, the 2nd version is white metal, the 3rd version is chromed, and the officers version is bronzed (brass underneath). The last version which is the rarest one of all is the silver coloured plastic version which was sewn onto the upper sleeves of the jacket - it had a small hole each side for sewing on with either silver thread of fishing line!

I have quite an extensive collection myself, but nothing to the North of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry apart from white metal and brass shoulder titles on the chainmail, and a couple of capbadges. Buttons do exist, as do silver versions of the officers capbadge!

bye for now,

tim

Default Arm badge

Would an arm badge have been worn by officers ?. I've got a bullion version, which was also worn by nco's on mess dress.

Default The North Irish Horse Yeomanry

Dear Gentlemen,

could someone tell me if the WW2 cap badge to the The North Irish Horse Yeomanry had a slider or 2 lugs? Or were there both versions in use by that time?

Thank you very much. Cheers
Phil

Hi Phil

Sadly I cannot answer your question "Lugs or slider in WW2"

I think the WW2 badge however would have been in brass or gilding metal.
In 1952 the KC badge was changed back to wm to be followed later by the new qc also in wm.

However I have put up three badges to NIH. The first is the kc officers' bronze with two blades, the kc wm or it maybe chrome c 1952 with slider, and one very small "maple leaf".

In May 1944 General G C Vokes, GOC 1st Canadian Infantry Division, stated that he would be pleased if all ranks 25 Tank Brigade would wear a Maple Leaf emblem in token of the part played by the Brigade assisting 1 Cdn Inf Div to break the Adolf Hitler Line.

This small emblem was worn by NIH at the top of each arm just below the shoulder title.

Best wishes

Gordon

Default NIH maple leaf

Hi Jo

Many thanks, that was remarkably fast!

I don't suppose there is a date with that photograph by any chance?

Best wishes

Gordon

Hi Gents,
the 2 cap badges I've seen this morning are in brass, no doubt about that.

The maple leaf was also worn onto the upper inverted black triangle of the 25th Tank Brigade formation patch ( will have to look at my archives to post a picture).

I have a few different NIH badges, most of them family items, and I don't think there are two the same. A badge with a lot of variations! Would love to get my hands on a bronze OSD one.

Default NIH WW2 badges

Hi Phil

Further to my earlier post I have looked at the badges again and realised that what I thought initially was a collar badge is in fact a cap and/ or beret badge.

It's smaller than the wm/chrome kc I posted. Could this be a WW2 kc brass or gillding metal badge?

Best wishes

Gordon

Hi Gordon,
the one in brass you have here is almost identical to the 2 I talked about. I'll try to post pictures of them tomorrow. Beautiful badge you have here!
Cheers
Phil

Definitely not worn by officers. Would be worn by nco's in number 1's.

Do B Sqn of QOY wear any NIH uniform at all now? Or is the NIH uniform and harp and crown badge gone forever?

John

Is the Badge shown in Wilkinson's Book...

a) A cap badge with the enamel (I think black?) missing.
b) An early ERVII/GRV NCO's Arm badge?
c) A Cap badge for Other Ranks.... and thats how it should look?

Is the cap badge shown on the hat "Voided"?
