Tiptaft rising sun

Hi all
can any one tell me when the Tiptaft rising sun was made what year did they make the badge and if a Tiptaft rising sun could have been worn at Gallipoli ??

Ticker Riley’s excellent research here https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...2&postcount=13 shows War Office contracts awarded to them on the following dates:


J. W. Tiptaft & Son Ltd, 55/6 Northampton St, Birmingham
October 1915
February, May & August 1916
July 1918

Whether the Rising Sun badge order would’ve been placed by the WO is another matter but nonetheless I think the dates are likely a good barometer of when orders began to be placed with them.

Very strange. Maybe lost by one of the Australians who was there in 1919 to recover bodies etc? The UK made Rising Suns would only have been issued to soldiers from 1916 to 1918.

Hard to say - it would have been in the ground from I guess 1919 to 1986 or so. I does look like its in very good condition for a badge supposedly buried in the ground for nearly 50 years.

Already at $102.50. Top dollar for an item dug up IMHO.

Potentially the Australian and Canadian governments may have independently placed orders with Tiptaft before October 1915 but this would require research to confirm or allay.

If memory serves the Gallipoli campaign ended in January 1916 so if the October 1915 order did include Rising Suns that wouldn’t leave much time to get them out there, not impossible but unlikely I’d say.

Others will hopefully have more information on these.

As far as I know the last Diggers left Anzac on or about 20th December 1915, certainly not in 1916.

15 December 1915 they left and i have a group to a chap who was in C company who stayed to the last ,minute firing the guns and manning the trenches . 7th LH G Finlay
