Default Shanghai Volunteer Corps

I purchased this pin awhile back and posted it on another forum. It was identified as a badge for the Shanghai Volunteer Corps (SVC) which as I understand were companies of militia from several nations living in the Shanghai International Settlement between 1854 to 1943. Does anyone know if this pin was worn by members of the British or possibly US militia? It looks British with the lug backs on the rear or could this have been worn by everyone? This pin came out of Northern California at a flea market.
