Default Norfolk 9th

Nice Andrew it amazes me just how thin the ORs are and that they survive. I wonder how many are dug in Russia like the buttons.

Hi dean, all those are dug, I brought them from a guy who had over 500 dug Russia plates, that’s over £5000 worth.

People are digging them up in Russia, and selling them.

A high proportion of the Albert Shako helmets worn by the infantry were simply thrown away during the Crimea war as unfit for purpose with the men generally preferring to wear either their “pork pie” caps or other warmer types of headgear. Remember this is where the knitted Balaclava came from.

There have been a truly amazing number of these dug up shako plates for sale over the years. With 500 worth over £5,000, that’s a tenner each.

I had a mate who'd nip over to the Crimea for Crimean War re-enactments, he had ground dug British badges and buttons that he was given by Ukrainian and other enthusiasts.
Sounded like they all sat around, Napoleonic and Crimean War types in the evenings "after the battle", hitting the vodka and swapping repro and ground dug insignia.
