Default Small Second Somerset Button

Hi Gents,

Here is my latest addition to my modest Militia Button Collection - it's a small (18.6mm) Second Somerset silver plate example. A lovely little button in really nice condition too.

The maker is Jennens and I note (unlike my other larger example) this one doesn't have the 'PoW plumes', from my research I believe this would place it prior to 1860, is that correct?

Cheers, Roy.

Hi Roy

"1860" is only an approximate date, there is very little button-wise than you can tie down to an exact date. It's also possible that both backmarks were used at the same time for a short period, until new dies were required.

So, your button was made pre c. 1860 but could have been worn up to 1881.

As to when it was first worn is a tricky one. The earlier coatee pattern button continued in use as a tunic button post 1855/1856 so your button was presumably introduced late 1850's or very early 1860's.

Thanks David,

I should have known it wouldn't be quite so simple, but good information, as always. And I'm happy to have this little beauty.

Cheers, Roy.

Hello Roy

One complication over the use by Jennens of the Prince of Wales's plumes is that they tended not to use this on smaller size buttons. Probably a question of practicality I should think.

Never say never, of course, but in my experience it is not that usual to find the plumes on anything other than the larger size buttons. I do have some small buttons where the plume has been used but these are far and away in the minority.

Regards
Roger

Hi Roger,

That's another good point and I'm sure there is some truth in what you say. Something to bear in mind with these smaller buttons.

Cheers, Roy.

Yes, that's a good point. I must admit I forgot it was a small size. Roger is quite right, more often than not the POW plume wasn't used on small size buttons.

So, your button would have been worn from whenever the 2nd pattern was introduced (which may well have been post 1860) up to 1881.

Thanks Gents,

One of the things I love about the forum and the scholarly members, is that ideas, opinions and views can be shared back and forth so openly. For a novice 'button' collector like myself it really is a most enjoyable and beneficial way to learn a new topic.

A big thank you to all.

Cheers, Roy.

P.s. Now where's that postman, I'm sure another button is due in..
