WWI Able Seaman and Leading Seaman insignia
Evening all, I am putting together a display of my Gran's Great Uncle's medal. He served in the RN in WWI with rank Able Seaman then Leading Seaman. I am trying to find out what insignia he would have worn for these ranks please. When he joined he was Boy class 2, I assume he did not wear any insignia for this? He later served on an H Class Submarine, H50. Apart from the cap tally, might he have worn anything specific for his time on H50? After the war he continued with the R.F.R. and his R.F.R. LS&GC medal shows the rank PO. Again any info on the insignia and cap badge? he wore would be appreciated please. Would he have worn the all metal PO cap Badge?
Thank you Wayne |

Wayne, I may have some spare patches that might be good for you. Let me see and I'll take pictures for you and if they are what you need I'll put them in the mail to you.

Able seamen did not have a badge, leading seamen wore a fouled anchor on the left arm & petty officers crossed fouled anchors with a crown above on the left arm. Do you know if he had any sub-ratings as there are badges for them. His service record will tell you if he did.

Thanks David, what is the difference between the WWI and WWII badges for Leading Seaman and Petty Officers please. I dont know about sub-ratings, the only thing on his record sheet is as below.

Under Sub Ratings is ST for Seaman Torpedoman which he qualified for on 5.2.15. The badge is a star above a torpedo [from 1904-1947] worn on the right arm. Attached is an example in gold wire for best dress.
