Not very helpful in identifying what the badge actually is but the "LVIII" will indicate The 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot and the castle and motto will represent Gibraltar 1779-83 as a battle honour.
The 58th amalgamated with The 48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot in 1881 to form The Northamptonshire Regiment.

A quick Google shows the the 58th serving in New Zealand1845-59.
In 1858 they were fire fighting in Auckland.

I have a swagger stick to the 58th Regiment of Foot in my collection. It has the same insignia.

A nice little item - do you think that "LVIII" and the Gibraltar amd Egypt battle honours would be used post 1881 amalgamation on such items by 2nd Bn Northamptonshire Regiment?

Possibly, but wouldn't it be unofficial?
