TYNESIDE FIRST PATTERN - FOR ONCE OVER
Hi all. Before I take the plunge at such a big number, would the team care to take a look at this one for me. I know they are copied heavily but this looks a good one if it is the case.
Thanks for any input. Simon. |

Hi Simon,
Here is mine for comparison. Note it is brooched, not lugged. The badge you have pictured does seem a good strike however. Sorry I can't be of more assistance. Cheers, Tinto |

Hello Simon,
I spotted the same badge . . . expensive! . . . and I don't know enough to tell a goody from a repro/fake . . . and there are lots of repros/fakes of this particular badge about. I have a couple of fake gap-fillers (purchased as fakes - at fake prices) . . . They're well made and apart from the fact that one's in brass, they're very well struck with good detail - in fact they look very similar to the ones above . . . I can't tell the difference. How can you tell ? It's got me beat . . . Hope somebody can help . . . before I win the Lotto and take the plunge! Lawrence |

Hi Gent's, thanks for the input, I like the strike I attached. It has a nice domed look to it also. The rear is very crisp, and the "seeding (I think that's what it's called looks very crisp.). The lugs too look quite stout. I might ask if I can have the option to return and take a chance.
I built my war chest up to go for that Lonsdale yesterday, but alas beaten. So I might treat myself to another I never thought I would get. Thanks and cheers Simon. |

According to Dennis Woods book, it was November 1914. The design was accepted by the TS committee on 9th November 1914.
He then goes onto describe the "Second Pattern", from early 1915. He states the 2nd pattern was designed by a Junior Officer of the 4th Battalion, and WM soldiers versions said to be issued in April 1915 as the gift of Mrs F M Laing. The WM unpierced version is 42x35mm A rare badge with a six month window. Possibly more allowing for some overlap? I know this is the subject of another recent thread, but do you have a scale? This is a prime example of a badge that could possibly benefit from some "scientific analysis"? PM me if you are able to weigh it, as I'd be very interested to compare notes. Cheers, Neil |

Neil - As far as photographic evidence goes the 'red satin' may have been limited to the officers 1st pattern silver badge, as the remainder wore theirs on the black silk of the plain glengarry. |

Thanks Graham. I need to buy this book :-)
I will try and post a picture of the tartan I have (had) at the back of my officers version. I am sure it's not "correct" but I've often thought it may help identify the owner by the Tartan pattern. Possible do you think? Cheers, Neil |

4th Tyneside Scottish S/T-NF S/Ts & Artists Cap Badge-OK?
This lot of badges all came together along with associated NF buttons and two rank stars. I think the Officers NF S/Ts are OK but would welcome views on the Tyneside Scottish(WM no 4 rather than GM(brass?)) and Artists Rifles Cap badge.
Many thanks Mark |

Lucky you, Mark. Don't know about the Artsist's Rifles, but the N/Grenade/F titles look good and the Tyneside Scottish too.
Col. Wood (hope I've spelt his name right . . .) says this about the TS Shoulder Titles [edited]: 1915 - 1919 Soldiers. Like the officers' S/T but in brass and in place of the grenade a numeral, sometimes in brass and sometimes in white metal, indicating the battalion as follows: 1st Battalion - figure 1 in white metal 2nd Battalion - figure 2 in brass or white metal 3rd Battalion - figure 3 in brass or white metal 4th Battalion - figure 4 in brass or white metal Other Battalions - no numeral Cheers |

Roger,
They were made with lugs and then replaced with pins so yours may never have had a pin. It is a superb original badge. Alan |
