This shows the s/p Brodrick in red for the 16th and 12th Lancers. The label Dates it to 1904 and obselete in 1905. |

Despite my best efforts I have been unable to find any pictures of the 19th Hussars 1903-05 which is the possible window for them wearing their white cap.
I do wonder whether the absence of 19th H Brodricks might be the reason that the slidered double-scroll elephant cap badge does not appear to have widely worn. Is the fact that both the cap and the badge were sealed in 1903 and neither worn not a coincidence? |

My money is still on the 19H double scroll being bandsmen’s badge for several reasons. The low number of bandsmen, unpopularity of the Broderick and change of Alexandra’s title all around the same time is the perfect storm I theorise to account for a badge being struck in low numbers with just a handful of known survivors.
Sadly I too have been unable to locate any images of their band in caps. |

Indeed with the regimental variance in headgear it's impossible to find out whether the band wore FSC, peaked caps or pill box caps in the early 1900's. We do know for certain that the 1st pattern single scroll cap badge was worn in 1900 period on slouch hats but other than that I cannot find a single photo of the regiment in anything other then ceremonial uniforms. The search goes on. Alan |

In the article in post 45, page 225 states that the 19th Hussars were one of the regiments which had a new badge designed for their Brodrick. Unfortunately it is not clear where he got this information from or whether the sealed pattern date of 1903 was assumed to be indicative that the new badge was of the new hat.
Bearing in mind the 19th Hussars Brodrick was in a hugely impractical white colour, that's just another reason why the regiment may have declined to wear the new hat and badge and retained the FSC/ pill box until the new peaked cap came in in 1905 which they seem to have worn with the Danneborg cross which the officers were already wearing on their peaked caps, |

A nice dated photo from 1905 of the 17th Lancers.

Is that a L. Corp. signaller instructor (seated) with the flags above the chevron? I had thought that only NCOs could be instructors...?
