I recently purchased a 1952-marked J.J&W Hood and CO Kilmarnock bonnet. The bonnet has the war department broad arrow with "C" above and "18" below, which matches the 1952 mark.

The bonnet has no rosette and the holes for the badge are above the diced band. The holes are approximately 4.3cm apart.

I thought it was a Scottish Horse bonnet, but the squares are black, not green. I have seen examples post-WWII from sellers with black squares, but I was not sure if they had just added the badge. I also thought the SH badge might be narrower.

Finally I thought maybe Transvaal Scottish before the establishment of the SA Republic in 1960?

I would appreciate anyone who can help me determine the proper badge for this bonnet.

Given the position of the piercings, possibly KOSB, though I think they've had a rosette.

No Scottish Horse cap badge has loop placements that wide. Even the ‘large’ 1902 slouch hat badge is only just that size in overall width and notwithstanding the loop placement is always much closer than you’d expect being confined within the circlet. All T.Y. era ScH badges are smaller than your dimensions.

Thank you both for the responses. Maybe the rosette was not attached, but held on by the badge. I have seen this on South African tams and balmorals.

I placed one of my spare KOSB badges on the bonnet and sure enough, the holes matched up to the lugs.

Unfortunately finding a period rosette is likely close to impossible!
