Hawke badge w/ bizarre lugs...
Found this badge in a box lot. Looks like a fine, original strike, but the flat lugs are something I've never seen before. Weld looks clean and period. Thoughts??
Thanks in advance! Mark ~ |

Hawke Btn
I have one of these, it came with a broken loop, I would say it's an original made by the "other maker". By that I mean someone other than JR Gaunt who seemed to make most of the RN Division badges.
Probably late during WWI as I would think JR Gaunt made the initial order. Rob |

Your badge certainly looks well made and I don't think it's made from the Gaunt dies. If you look at the bird's left hand wing (right hand side as you look at it) of the typical Gaunt badge I've attached below you'll see that there are a few differences in the design of the top half of the wing. As to whether it's genuine or not I would prefer to have the badge in hand before making a decision. Although all the Bn badges I have are Gaunt marked (tablets/plaques) I'm not convinced that Gaunt was the only maker. Paddy Last edited by Paddy; 15-02-12 at 11:51 AM. Reason: adding text |

Mark, The "HOOD" in my collection is made in same way, Nice clean detailed strike , the holes in my lugs are round, I think yours are squeezed to make them pass through a hole more easily,

Paddy: Understood. Appreciate your observations!
AI: That's interesting. Agreed. These lugs do appear to be pinched. Any chance you could post a pic of the lugs on your Hood badge for comparison?? Thanks all! M~

Interesting - this type of flat-stamped lug is common on Canadian-made CEF badges from WW1, usually in copper. Cheers, Ian.
