Default No10 commando shoulder titles - serif type

An uncommon set of serif type No10 commando titles just sold on ebay for an eye watering hammer price of £2,300.00.

Just to give you guys an impression of their market value.

That is very cheap Luke for a rare variant title - Personally I rate them a lot more than that - but I am a Commando nerd. They feature in Norwegian and Belgian Troop images among others - highly desirable.
Well done to the buyer - they got a bargain from my personal perspective ...
I am however, very unsure of the No.2 title
All the best
Mike

@Luc: Yes Luc very nice variant (discussed with Mike) I tried to bid on it but got outbided. I don't know who won the price.

@Mike: Yes it seems like the No.2 was not achieving unanimity.

Default No10 commando shoulder titles - serif type

Looking at the bidding history, the buyer was prepared to go much further with his purchase, Mike B was right in saying he bought this at a reasonable price.

SF original badges are at a premium, 80+ years old and so many discarded and destroyed, no wonder the fakers have latched on to these, big money . . !

The No2 title is not original in my opinion, though the pictures are not great.

@Jon: I am not willing to spend such amount on a badge.

Jack was selling some not so long ago of this exact same type as in this lot 2000£ for one title.

To be honest, that is more like what I would expect - but really only from a specialist collector. £2000 is a lot of money, but they are rare, and you need to want one to pay that. Competition from continental collectors push No.10 (I-A) Cdo to premium prices, also No.4 Cdo with the French Tp connection

Hi Mike/Team

Here is my 4 commando, no provenance looks like handguided? I also have a France Title , would make a nice set I guess?

Would 4 commando command a similar price out of curiosity?

cheers

Phill

Hello Phil
Both titles are nice. The French in 10 (I-A) Cdo tended to wear a serif FRANCE (see attachment), but some did wear the Non Serif like yours. The No.10 Red on Black serif is a particularly desirable variant. In my opinion, and experience, more desirable even that the printed No.10. In terms of perceived desirability, the non-serif embroidered No.10 comes after the printed - but prices are rising and even they are commanding around £1500.

I would rate your No.4 at a similar price - not quite as much demand as No.10, but getting there - and yours is a variant with more unusual shaped '4' with dash rather than dot below raise 'o' in No - yes, I bet you can hear the zip being done up on my anorak. I would rate yours at four figures certainly, and more like £1500 if specialist collectors (fellow Commando nerds) were seeking one.

UPDATE - I forgot to mention, but think you already knew - when the French Troops of No.10 (I-A) Cdo were posted to No.4 Cdo pre D-Day, they again retained FRANCE titles - most, again were serif. They wore them above the No.4 COMMANDO title.

I will be covering all this in the book I am am working on as a companion to my 'Commando Compendium' - but am concentrating on related Commando Group and previous unit insignia of WW2.

I hope this is useful - of course this is all just my opinion.
All the best Phil, thanks for sharing
Mike

Hi Mike

Apologies late reply, back from work.

As usual thanks for your indepth reply,I always look forward to your replies on the commando's.

Wow im surprised at the price I figured maybe 300-400 GBP although like with any insignia its only worth the price some one is willing at the time to pay with negotiation.

Possibly the differance in the titles could come down to machine or hand guided guided variations just a thought.

I cant wait to add your volume II of insignia , that will be superb if just the few you have shown in Volume I is anything to go by we are in for treat and if anyone is interested in UK Special Forces of WWII its a must have, if you like OOB,deatiled timelines, formation and evolution plus the personalities and of course the battles it will keep you going back over again and again, there is a lot to digest.

Thanks again Mike

Phill
