Default Wigan Corps - thoughts please

This badge has been copied to death BUT this bronze example is fretted/ voided and if someone has done it to deceive they have gone to a lot of trouble for not a big reward.

Thoughts on this example welcomed please.

Just hope there haven’t been dozens on the market that I haven’t seen.

P.

I saw it on eBay. Hopefully you didn’t buy it.

A very inventive fake and reasonably (from the front) well voided.

Genuine badges read ‘volunteer’ not ‘volunteers’ as per the Martin Marsh series of fakes. If you examine it closely you’ll notice the usual repro rounded letter ends, hollow jewels etc. etc.

Thanks Luke,

Kipling and King seem to think it should be Volunteers.

Agreed,

It is the common reproduction badge, with a lot of effort made to void it. It was in a mixed lot in an auction last month, before appearing on eBay, but I can't remember which auction house. This is the first time I have seen a voided version, either real or fake. K&K does indeed refer to Lancashire Volunteers, but the genuine badges do not have the 'S'...

Had it been real, it would be a VTC unit. I included the other two similar badges (1st Btn 47A and NE Lancs) in my 'VTC Common Fakes' album, but didn't have a genuine Wigan badge at the time.

That may have been the name but all the (genuine) badges KK show read ‘volunteer’.

Like Tim says the method of constructions is also wrong, genuine badges are quite unique and reasonably unusual in the method for the time.
