Default Unusual cap badge

Can anyone please tell me the significance of cap badge backing this airman is wearing?

Thank you,

Simon.

One possibility is a Coloured Plastic Disk for RAF Boy Entrant.

Hi Simon
If you follow this link, this thread talks about the different coloured disks worn by apprentices.

Being a bit smaller than those in the pictures i don't know if this was worn inside the beret or as a badge backing.

Default hat badge disk

The picture shown at the beginning of the thread has nothing to do with Boy Entrants/Apprentices, as the airman is wearing the standard black cap band.
As he also appears to have no rank badges. I would suggest it is a picture of someone still in basic training. Over the years it has not been uncommon for trainees to wear such backings to distinguish stage of training. trade etc. The practice continues today, albeit usually on Berets and shoulder straps, neither of which was worn with the No1 Uniform shown. The sheen of the uniform also suggests it is new.

I joined in '83 as an Electronics Mechanic (Telecommunications) and wore a Green disc during trade training. The direct entrant techies wore Red, Yellow & light Blue, according to branch. Don't recall wearing it on an S/D hat anytime though.

Basic trainees at Halton still wear different coloured backings on the beret depending on what flight you are on. Also RAF Regiment trainees at Honington wear different colours on the beret too, not just apprentices.

Cheers, Bill
