Hi Steve

Nice to see a really comprehensive collection! I'll bet that there are a few more of them to collect but well done so far!

Hello Steve, Having toured some of the Spanish Civil War’s battle sites in the early 70’s and read numerous books on the subject, it had never occurred to me to collect any of the memorabilia associated with the event. So I was especially pleased to see your collection. Strangely, after marrying a lady from Madrid and settling here in Canada, our “Letter Carrier” (Postman) was an ex Mackenzie - Papineau Battalion member. He and I had many a chat and I’ll always remember his very caustic remarks about the treatment he received after his return to Canada. He was not a communist by any means but had been moved by an overpowering sense that a free democratically elected government and the people of Spain were being crushed by Franco and his Allies, Mussolini and Hitler. I cannot decipher which of the two “Sides” your mementos are attributed to but would invite you to read “The Mackenzie Battalion” by Victor Hoar (about the Canadians who fought on the Republican side). “Between the Bullet and the Lie” by Cecil Eby (the Americans on the Republican side) and “Britons in Spain” by William Rust. There are of course many other “Histories” of the Civil War and perhaps the most widely read is “The Spanish Civil War” by Hugh Thomas. Those four books may stir your interest or turn you off politics forever! Regards, D.J.
