Brilliant, thanks Luke. That's the one I call the 'dirt in the eye' motto, so that clears that up for me.
This is probably the die that Regalia Specialist are still using I suppose.

Probably stating the obvious here, but I showed this to a retired jeweller friend who worked in the UK, at one stage for Firmin.

He said that the "winking eye" badge is the result of some spotty herbert dropping something (very heavy and with a sharp edge!) onto the die. This would produce a hollow in the die and this would then become a raised mark in the finished product.

Chances are that, when this was picked up by the "quality control" it would have been biffed.....

Where did it go after that?

Reading Regalia Specialist blurb, it seems they have a number of original dies. Maybe they picked up a job lot of them when they were established back in 1975, possibly when one of the original manufacturers closed down. For the sake of modern day collectors it would have been better if the original dies had been destroyed IMO.
