SCOTTISH MEDICAL PATCH
I have just brought a square of Graham of Montrose Ancient tartan approx. 110mm square.
It is listed as RAMC Royal Army Medical Corps, Medical Services and Scottish 205 Field Hospital of the Scottish Division, QARANC Queen Alexandria s Royal Army Nursing Corps, Royal Army Dental Corps and Royal Army Veterinary Corps. It is also listed - Arm patches measure approx. 50 mm and cap, beret & Tam O Shanter patches at around 75 mm. Can you tell me which way the tartan should orientated, by colour, square, point to top etc please? engr9266 Jerry

Different tartans. The piece your showing Jerry looks more like the modern Graham rather than the ancient tartan.

I sent a message to the seller who agrees that the cloth was cut wrong and will send me the correctly cut tartan.

Looking at whats online ,it appears that the square is cut on the white lines which puts the thin black cross lines at the centre.

Jerry, Maybe this will be of some help. I received this as a very kind gift from one of my dealer friends and I think it helps confirm what they wore. I also have a picture of it being worn on a tam, but since there is already some posted I won't duplicate it. I have not seen one with the white line in it before.

The 205 history shows the correct orientation (which agrees with Bess' picture) in the link below:

It’s usual for all personnel within a unit to wear the same headdress and, given this, it’s my understanding that all trades would wear it, albeit with their respective cap badges in situ.
