Default Isle of Man rifle Volunteers

This is quite a big badge so i presume its a plate of some sort, i cant find any other badges like this, anymore info would be much appreciated. Apparently its silver, i got a note stuck to the back saying its silver by a museum .

Its an other ranks , white metal helmet plate of the Isle of Man Rifle Volunteers c. 1878 - 1888.
Became 7th (Isle of Man) VB, Kings in 1888.

Its not silver.

regards

I don't think it is silver. It appears to be an Other Ranks helmet plate. It probably dates from 1881 to about 1888. There is a problem with the date of changing titles on badges from IoMRV to 7th (IoM) Vol Bn.

Simon just pipped my post with more accurate dates !

As far as I know, (my main source being Westlake), they were the 2nd Isle of Man RVC from their start in 1860 until later in 1880 when they were renumbered as the 1st Isle of Man RVC.

The fact that they were the only Isle of Man RVC since 1870 (the 3rd disbanded 1869 and the 1st and 4th in 1870) probably lead them into omitting the number on their badges.

Thankyou for your help and pictures.
I have no idea why the tag on the badge said it was silver, the back of the badge is what an old non silver sixpence would look like when dug up after a few years. The front however is still smooth and only discoloured.
Its not magnetic but painfully sharp so i found out )
Is it ok to get an estimate on the price of it as most of the badges i have are or will be for sale sometime or other.
