A brief glance at the photograph in post six clearly shows a seven stripe ribbon so I very much doubt if a "best guess" has been made.

Going by the black and white photo I am wondering if he saw any pre-war Regular Army service. He looks to be in his thirties to me. The only medal ribbon to fit, I am thinking, would be for the Natal Native Rebellion of 1906. I know it's a long shot but you can't beat a good old wild stab in the dark.
