Captain A Larocoue

Hello,

I have a British War Medal embossed to a CAPT A. LAROCOUE.

I had though him to be a Gunner because of an artillery 'gun' badge with CANADA scroll, a gold embroidered 8-flamed collar grenade and some uniform and ball buttons with gun and crown that came with the medal.

However there were also some RCAMC buttons with it.

I have searched the CEF artillery officers' book and he is not listed there. I've also searched the CEF Service records online under Larocque and Larocoue with no luck.

Does anybody familiar with the process have any other suggestions. Perhaps I should be looking in British Army lists.

Try LAROCQUE would be more French Canadian.

There was an Alphonse Larocque, Captain in the CADC:

Thanks Darrell, I will look him up.

Billy, I did think Larocque would be the correct spelling but have looked at the stamping closely and it definitely O.

It is possible of course that it was just something thrown together by the seller from his bits and pieces box and the badges were no relation to the medal.

I looked through three volumes of the Canadian Militia List. One for January 1916, one for October 1916 and one for April 1917. The Militia List recorded the names of all the officers in the Militia and the CEF. None of them contained an entry for a Larocoue. Each List had the same three Larocque's but none with a first initial of A.

The first was Captain N.D'A. Larocque with the Canadian Army Veterinary Corps stationed with Military District 5 in Quebec City.

The second was Henri Pie Maria Joseph Alfred Larocque with the Reserve of Officers as a result of graduating from the Royal Military College in 1897.

The final was Lieutenant R. Larocque serving in the Militia with the 85th Regiment in Montreal.

None of them would have qualified for a British War Medal with their service as listed.

There was no entry for an Alphonse Larocque but if he joined the CEF after April 1917 there wouldn't be. A check with the British Army List might be the route to go.

Thanks Dan, I looked at Darrell's man, he was a very late war enlistment.

A dentist with no prior service in any branch of the Canadian Forces and definitely no connection with the artillery of Canada.
