Jo, I wouldn't dismiss it as unthinkable in light of how scared the allies were in thinking that Stalin may very well have been a major problem for the allies (and he was). Even the Germans thought that Stalin was a nutter. Bearing in mind that Stalin was responsible for killing millions of his own people (after WWII) and then the Cold War that followed. Not so unthinkable.
Remember what Saddam did in Iraq when the "allies" all stopped short (contrary to what General Schwarzkopf more "realistic" views were - rather than all the mamby, pamby politicians view) - and Saddam killed 100's of thousands of his "own" people - that was something we could have done something about. And didn't. I have met a few Iraqi nationals over the years who were there before and after the war - one even played football when Uday was running the team, but was unlucky (he thought) to get canned for being unfit... He changed his mind pretty quick.
I wonder how many 10's of thousands more innocent people - over the 100,000 already dead in Syria have to die before the West does something...??? A million? all of them?? How will we be judged in years to come. Pol Pot killed millions and dies under house arrest.... Wow. That must have been unpleasant.
The murders that Stalin initiated in Katyn against a people he hated, was always blamed - by the Russians for decades - on the Germans - never mind all those poor people the British Military sent back to him after the war - because Stalin (or Uncle Vanya as he known to a lot of Russians) wanted them to..... and we knew they were being sent to their deaths. Because the allies didn't want to upset the Russian "Bear"......... We were partly to blame for that as well....
When all said and done its really easy to judge Churchill (or anyone else for that matter) today, when we were not there at the time. As a kid during the 50's there was a definite sense of foreboding that we were going to get nuked. As Eddie Izzard once commented at one of his shows: (paraphrasing) Kill once person, you go to jail; Kill a few dozen, mental institution; Kill a million or more, house arrest. Idi Amin lived out his days in Jeddah - very nice. I'm having a break.
By the way, I hope they catch the moron who tried to kill that French soldier. You take care and all the best. David

Instead of quoting Wikipedia, read William Manchester's three volume biography of Churchill (the last volume completed by Paul Reid after Manchester's death) and you will see just how many strange ideas Churchill had, but at the same time, how prescient he was regarding Hitler and Stalin.

Be wary of Wikipedia. I challenge you to cite Wikipedia as a source in a university level term paper and see what the marker has to say.
