Hi, I am no expert on British badges, but my dad served in the British army during WW11 in the RAC. I have his RAC cap badge which has lugs top & bottom. There are some small differences as well -maybe a variation?
A question though is when was the badge worn? Although my dad was commissioned into the the North Stafford's (174) [got his badge] he soon after became part of one of the RTR [also got his badge] units. He applied for & was accepted into the Royal Scots Greys [and got his badges]. All the time he was RAC. Dave |

The RAC mailed fist badge was worn form 1941 by either:
a. RAC trainees before they were assigned to a regiment with a cap badge of their own. b. One of the war-raised RAC regiments who wore the RAC cap badge. These were regts in their own right and not part of the cavalry or RTR. Alan |

Getting back to the original thread. I have put these two badges for comparison. There are differences at the arrow heads and just below at the joining lines, one being voided, the other not. Gaylors book seems to show one version, whereas Kipling and King (fig 1919) seems to show the other. Obviously the lugs are not shown. So, the question remains. For me, the badge shown here with N/S lugs, is by far more inferior in definition, feel, and quality. The feet on the lugs are also off putting. Maybe both are fakes ? Any comments ?

Hi all, re-opening this thread.
I was looking at commando units and found some RAC in it: https://gallery.commandoveterans.org...touch.jpg.html So interested of learning more about the badge during normandy campaign. I read a few threads on the forum. Seems quite complicated conversion with RAC. Here are a few badges I found I would like an opinion on it it they could be WW2 or copies ? Cheers |

Acquired today purely because of the unusual sheet metal lugs.

I have one very similar to Tony's example (voiding around arrows and index finger), however the sheet lugs run North/South on this one.
Comparing it to other examples posted on the forum; I don't like the quality on this one, but whether that's down to it simply being a variation, or a restrike, I can't tell. |

Both are fine. If you’re not happy with it please PM and I’ll take it off your hands.
