And here is the 603 Squadron band playing at a funeral of a Luftwaffe crew in late 1939.

Also a magazine article confirming that 603 also wore the badges from 1933. http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchi...0-%201074.html

They both wear the grey Douglas tartan.

Default 602 City of Glasgow Bomber Squadron

I am resurrecting this old thread in the hope that there is additional information out there which will assist in identifying the badge below. RAF badges are not my normal fare but since my daughter is currently a member of 602 I could not pass up the purchase.

My searches on the net have revealed a number of images of the pipe band badges of 602 and 603 all of which seem to be cast in one piece surmounted by the RAF eagle. My badge does not have the eagle and appears never to have had the eagle. My question is what is it? The simple answer is that it is a sporran badge but it seems the sporran badge also had the eagle.

All information welcome

Eric

There are examples of these badges that are due struck around, way more rarer than cast versions.

Spotted a "post 1957" cast badge but it is described as having "two rear posts with washer and nuts" which I assume would be a sporran/pouch badge.

One thing I noticed is that the majority of cap (?) badges have loops and also have no 'gap' between the scroll ends and the shield .(like badge in post"1)

Could the badge without the eagle be a pre 1938 Auxiliary Air Force one ?

602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron became the first Auxiliary Air Force Squadron to be formed on 12th September 1925.

The squadron continued in the light bomber role until 1 November 1938 when it was redesignated as an Army Co-operation unit.
Have you tried contacting the 602 Squadron Museum Association to see if they can help ?

I can find numerous examples of die struck Edinburgh badges but haven't found any for Glasgow.

Quote:
In 1933 the Squadron, along with No. 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron was given permission to raise a pipe band, their uniform consisting of kilts and glengarry headdress. A special badge was struck in brass for wear on both the sporran and glengarry bearing an Eagle over a shield showing Edinburgh Castle. The badges were cast in brass with lugs east to west and north to south, which are thought to be for the Sporran and glengarry respectively. After the war badges were die struck in brass, being worn until the bands were disbanded in 1957/58.

Thanks for your contributions so far, it's much appreciated.

I was unaware of the existence of die struck badges, my searches only revealing cast. Mind you I was only searching for 602 examples so perhaps there are no struck badges for this squadron.

Does anyone have a struck 602 they can show?

And that is a pretty chunky price for that badge, I wonder what the Minden example sold for.

I have tried going into the museum but was told by the folks in the Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum, both museums being in the same building, that no-one had been seen since lockdown. They did give me contact details but the emails kept bouncing back and the phone number would not connect. However using the link you provided I have this afternoon sent an enquiry.
I will report back on any developments.

Thanks again.

Eric
