Lovat's Scouts
Alex,
here are two of mine the left as viewed measures 48 mm across, whereas the right only 45mm. IMO the left is the genuine badge: 1. It has a lot more depth, the edge folds over 4 mm. 2. Antlers are thicker and more detailed. 3. The fur on the neck is smoother and feathers out towards the torse. 4. The lugs are longer and thicker. 5. Much thicker metal overall. Maybe the badge on the right (very similar to yours) is good too and just a different strike? I prefer the one on the left! They might even both be copies? Anyone else got observations? Best regards - Andy |

I agree that the one on the right is a fake. The shape of the deer is wrong and shows a crudity of detail that the original's do not have. There is a recent thread on Lovats in the yeomanry section.
As regards the one first shown, actually I quite like it. These are my 2 and the one on the left is the same as Andy's and a fake. Alan Last edited by Alan O; 07-11-13 at 02:53 PM. |

Hi Andy,
Do any of these versions have the tips of the antlers voided ? From my album you will see that I only have the small ' Y ' and ' I.Y. ' versions, my large badge ( 46mm Dia ), has the belt surround but a lot of the banded badges, like yours, seem to have an excess of metal round the tips, this has put me off in the past !! Dave.

Dave,
not sure? Voiding would make them very fragile? Andy |

Hi Guys
Thanks for the replies. The Leeds Rifles is no surprise but I'm still undecided about the LS badge. Mine does have a fair ridge on the edge and the lugs are quite a good length. I won't bin it just yet but still not too happy with it, partially because they aren't that common. I'll wait for more info before I bin it unless someone can give a definitive yay or nay. Cheers, Alex |

Lovat Scouts
These are the small ones that everyone regards as copies?

The solid one looks wrong but I would not say that the other 2 are regarded ' by everyone as copies'?

Andy,
Surely, as every badge that I have ever posted that has had this type of 'foot' at the bottom of the lug has been deemed (by this forum) a fake. Therefore, as one of your smaller ones also has this type of 'lug foot' then it must also be a fake - mustn't it? I can't quite make out the others. So, the one that appears to have the lugs 'growing' out of the back of the badge must be ok. If I didn't know any better, just because the pair of RCCS silver gilt collars & a pair of RCCS bronze collars also have this exact type of 'lug foot', I would almost be prepared to give them away. Even my HMS (1898) 7th DG's arm badge has this same type of lug - must be a fake as well. In fact, many of my badges seem to be suffering in the same way. Interesting. Maybe the 'footed lugs' are legitimately used for repairs........ Thats my pre-Xmas 2009 gripe out of the way. Now I am going to try and track down exactly how many of what I thought were legitimate badges have these 'fake lugs'. This will take a while. Bugger, even my 7DG officers gilded badge has 'fake lugs' as well....... Good luck with getting your badges authenticated Andy. I hope you have a merry Xmas and a happy new year; and get yourself some good badges. All the best, david |

I'm with David here,
I'm sure I was told that it was only a particular type of lug with feet on that were supposed to be used on re-strikes. If not, I have bought quite a few badges as guaranteed genuine, from some quite famous sellers........................................... ...........including forum members ?? Seasons greetings ?? Dave.

As Alan brought up, I am not party to the opinion that the two voided examples are always fakes.
I think this badge has been discussed before and mention was made of the fact that many were turned out during ww2. I also think that these can be among the most difficult, if not impossible, badges to appraise as genuine or restrike. CB |

IF YOU HAD THE CHOICE -LOVATS ?
Hi team, I hope this is the right area in the forums to ask this type of question. I have the possibility to get either of these, but I wanted to ask if you had the choice which would be the one you would go for.
THANKS |

Not the large w/m one as it is probably a fake.

Yep, I agree. The big one with and without the garter tail has been done to death.
