Default The Highland Gunners

Whilst at the Aemy Air Corps Families day last Saturday a gun team from Larkhill pitched up with a 105mm Howitzer. The Sergeant was wearing on his chest a tartan backing, Robinson Tartan, to his stripes. He belonged to the 19th. Regt. R.A.The Highland Gunners
His lance bdr. was from the 40th. Regt. R.A. The picture of his tartan will not appear, sorry. The Lowland Gunners. John

In my opinion this is just the type of thing we should be recording as evidence for future queries.

Default Highland gunners

Thanks 8th. Foot.for your remarks. I had a very interesting short lecture on the 105 gunand how it operetes from the sergeant displaying it, he seemed very pleased that anyone would be so interested in his badge. John

Here is a 19th Regt slide to a gunner (Robinson Hunting tartan) as well as that to a L/Bdr in 40th Regt. The 40th Regt slide is of a stylised Hume tartan.

Well done that man. Now I know about both gunners, thanks, John.

Hi Blackpowder44, hope you don’t mind me gate crashing your interesting thread with a query.

I have attached two photos of a WW2 Economy Pattern BD blouse with some interesting insignia.

Was wondering if anyone could identify which unit the tartan patch indicates?

Cheers, Wairua

Wish I could help identify the two very nice combination signs. No doubt someone on here will be along soon with the answers. John.

Choose from;
126 or 127 or 128 (Highland) Field Regiments RA (TA) may even be a Battery of one of those regiments, or 61 Anti Tank Regt RA (TA).

This BD looks to be to the 79th (Scottish Horse) Medium Regiment RA. They wore the 2nd Army flash. My guess on the 51st HD sign (although I've no proof) is a sort of battle honour as the 79th was often in support of the 51st Highland. In fact, their pipers were included in the 51st Div's massed pipes and drums. Will upload a pic of the sleeve flash I have shortly.

Combo patch to 79th Medium Regiment RA. Tartan is Murray of Tullibardine.

Yet another 'Regimental Flash' I do not have recorded. Can you please tell me the source of the identification?

Thanks both 54bty and Erracht. Some interesting units suggested there, especially to someone who focuses more on Infantry.

So far I have ruled out Red Erskine, Red Grant and MacDuff (don’s tinfoil hat and awaits incoming….) and was thinking MacDonnell of Keppoch as worn by 71 Engineers was a possibility.

Erracht, your suggestion of Murray of Tullibardine looks promising although I thought Scottish Horse wore Fraser Hunting?

Regimental tartan can be confusing at the best of times with Pipers, SNCO’s and different orders of dress making it even more complicated but it’s one area I always find interesting due to the tribal nature of it all.

Cheers Wairua

Actually, Fraser Hunting was worn by the Lovat Scouts...

Murray Tullibardine was worn by pipers of the Scottish Horse; the rest of the Regiment was entitled to Murray of Atholl.

54 Bty, afraid I have no reference to cite, as I've had to deduce this one by process of elimination. The only unit I can find (to date) that would wear a Murray Tullibardine swatch, RA arm of service strip, and the 2nd Corps flash would be 79th Med Regt RA. Still looking for definitive confirmation or rebuttal on this one, but thus far all I have approached this with tend to agree. I am also in the process of analysing a few other RA tartan swatches I've come across.
