10th Gurkha Rifles small badges
I bought these 3 items a while back thinking they were officers silvered badges having only seen the front view, with no dimensions given. I was very surprised to see the size of them when they arrived. The coin used for size reference is a UK 5 pence.
Any ideas of what they were used for? Al |

Thanks for that. I've been informed that they are 2 damaged, and one complete, mess dress badges.

What are the dimensions of the complete one? If its 26mm x28mm then its a beret badge if its 20mm x 21 or 19mm X 21mm then it could be a either a beret badge or a collar. The collars were worn on the mess dress from around 1925 > 1950. The beret badges were worn from around 1937 > 1950. Hope this helps. Tim

Thanks for the advice. The badge is 19mm x 21mm, So could be as you said a collar or cap badge. My instinct says collar as it's so small and delicate. Cheers. Al |

The regiment wore those small badges for the beret. As long-standing (as opposed to converted) rifle regiments the 10th GR did not wear collar badges but used shoulder titles instead.

They did wear collar badges on the hot weather mess dress from 1937 > 1950 and cold weather mess dress from 1925 > WW2, and it was those badges that I was referring to. Tim

Tim,
10GR wore collars on Mess dress till 1994, Sgts & WO,s from 90-94. The ones illustrated are 1950-1994 as they have Princess Marys cypher. You can see where the two have had it broken off. Regards Steve . (Ref 10GR E2) Last edited by Gurkha; 26-11-18 at 04:14 PM. |
