Hey

Can anyone explain why a norfolk Regiment Button has Britannia facing right instead or the usual left ??

Are you referring to the one that's recently appeared on eBay? If so I'm not entirely sure that's for the Norfolk Rgt - never seen a right facing Britannia with a sailing ship associated with the Norfolks, Royal or otherwise??

A "facing pair" button from a double breasted tunic?
(Tho having a sailing ship as part of the design doesn't sound right for the regiment).

Hi Leigh,

It's only an assumption on my part that Tarabelle is asking about this button:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Norfolk-R...sAAOSw~yhevsmJ

If so the design seems all wrong for the Norfolks, trident in wrong place, no offered Olive branch, sailing ship, a lighthouse?? Still, as ever I remain to be educated on such matters!

So rsm is spot on, the design is all wrong, I think you will find it’s a railway or shipping button, Norfolk in any shape or form it is not. All the best andrew

Believe the London and North Western Railway Police used a Britannia with ship and lighthouse as both their button and helmet plate badge but again I believe that this was left facing and not right.

Simon.

The answer will be found in the John Mollo collection - with documentation of all puggaree badges - in the IWM.

(I went to see for only one unit a few years ago....! but I may go back and see others)

Useless piece of trivia .

Penny of Queen Victoria, 1862 has right facing Britannia , lighthouse and ship.

The ship at right is absent in later mintages.

If that is the button in question then it is post 1895 as that is when Pitt & Co moved from St. Martin’s Lane to Maddox Street.
