Default Highland light infantry 5th,7th,8th battalion

Could someone please give me there thoughts on this badge. I don’t think ASSAYE has been removed as where letters should have been it appears to be seeded. But still part of letters appear to be there if very faint, especially at bottom of letter. On the reverse it appears as though letters have been filled in. Is this in fact someone’s attempt to pass this off as a TF badge.

The die has been hobbed to erase the lettering and produce a TF variation with the blank seeded scroll.

This was a common practice and is also regularly seen on numerous Yeomanry badges with the erasure of the ‘Imperial’ titles post 1908.

The level and quality of this erasing process on the die varies significantly, some are perfectly seeded with no trace of what was originally there whilst others are still easily readable.

Your badge is very nice and absolutely OK.
